Selection Process

How Nominations Work

Anyone can nominate a player. But not all nominations carry the same weight.

Utah Top 50 accepts player nominations from anyone in the basketball community — coaches, trainers, parents, teammates, and fans. Our selection committee reviews every nomination as part of the evaluation process for upcoming events.

However, we believe in transparency: different types of nominators carry different weight in our selection process.

High School Head Coaches

Highest Weight

Head coaches see their players every day in practice, in games, and in the weight room. A head coach nomination tells our selection committee "I'm putting my professional reputation behind this player."

HS Assistant Coaches & College Coaches

High Weight

Assistant coaches and college coaches work closely with players and have professional credibility evaluating basketball talent. Their nominations carry significant weight.

Club/AAU Coaches & Skills Trainers

Moderate Weight

Club coaches and trainers see players in competitive and training environments outside school programs. They often identify talent that school coaches may overlook.

Parents & Guardians

Lower Weight

We welcome parent nominations. However, our selection committee recognizes parent nominations may reflect pride rather than objective evaluation, so they carry less weight than coaching nominations.

Other (Teammates, Friends, Fans)

Lowest Weight

Anyone can nominate a player they believe deserves consideration. These nominations are logged and reviewed but carry the least weight in the selection process.

Cross-School Nominations — The Strongest Signal

Some of the most valuable nominations we receive come from coaches who nominate players from OTHER schools — including their direct rivals and opponents.

Why? Because when a coach says "this kid on the other team is one of the best players I've seen," that's about as objective as basketball evaluation gets. There's no parental pressure, no roster loyalty — just a basketball coach recognizing talent they competed against.

We strongly encourage high school coaches to nominate not only their own players but any player in their region who they believe deserves consideration. You've scouted your opponents all season. You know who the best players are. Tell us.

All nominations are confidential — if you nominate a player from a rival school, nobody will know it came from you. Not the player, not their coach, not their parents.

A nomination does not guarantee an invitation to Utah Top 50 events. Our selection committee evaluates nominated players using all available data — T50 Scores from past events, season statistics, game film, and coaching evaluations — before making invitation decisions.

Nominator identities are kept confidential to protect coaches from being questioned about their nomination decisions. Confidentiality encourages honest, candid nominations without political consequences.
